Jane Tilton says:
Winter weather can bring on a spate of coughs, colds, chills and even flu. It is important that you keep yourself as healthy as possible, by eating sensibly, exercising and drinking plenty of water.
plenty of rest.It is always hard to drink water in the colder weather, so try adding some hot water to your bottle of cold. Add a squirt of lemon or lime juice as well or a slice of the fruit. Even blueberries and blackberries can be added. Soups are another way of ensuring that you keep a high liquid intake. They are also a fantastic way of feeding yourself if you do come down with something. Add plenty of garlic, chilli, ginger, turmeric and lemongrass and onions to a basic stock (chicken or vegetable). Your body will heat up which will help to kill any infections you might have.
Bathing in a warm to hot bath with some ginger, rosemary, or eucalyptus oil can help those aching muscles you get when coming down with a heavy cold or flu. A good mixture is 2 parts ginger, 3 parts rosemary and 3 parts eucalyptus and make sure you mix well into the water before you get in. If you have sensitive skin, mix into a little full fat milk or vodka before adding to the bath. Make sure the bath isn’t too hot as you don’t want to feel faint as you stand up. Go straight to bed wearing a pair of thick woollen socks (very fetching!) and hopefully you will feel much better in the morning.
For coughs and blocked up sinuses having a steam with tea tree, eucalyptus or basil oil can really help loosen thing up. Pour a basinful of very hot water and add to it 5 drops of your chosen oil, or
a mixture of oils. Basil is especially good for sinuses. Cover your head with a towel and breath in and out for a count of 10, remove your face, rest and repeat as many times as you feel necessary. You can build up the time you hold your head over the bowl until you reach 3 minutes. Finally if you do get a bad cold, don't be generous and share it with others. Stay at home, keep warm and rest up. The world won't stop if you have a couple of days off! This article can also be read in the November issue of Dulwich Life.
