Working in the complementary health field my colleagues and I notice that we get cycles of clients. At the moment I am seeing several pregnant women. A couple of weeks ago it was people with food intolerances and next week it maybe those wanting to get pregnant or those who jsut need some pampering.
If a pregnant woman asks me what treatment I would recommend, I would, nine times out of ten, say Reflexology. Why?
Because it is totally relaxing
It works on the whole body, through the feet so there is no turning over, undressing or use of oils.
The baby seems to enjoy as much as the mother.
Reflexology is a treatment that works primarily on the feet (althought there is also hand and ear reflex points). The idea behind it being that the body is represented on the feet, thus the big toe represents the head, the right foot reflects the organs found on the right side and the left the left. So you would find the liver reflex points mainly on the right foot and the heart on the left.
No one is exactly sure how it works. Some people say it is because you are working on meridian points, others because you stimulate nerve endings. Take your pick. All we know is that it does work and that it is a very ancient form of treatment. Pictures in Egyptian tombs show people having their feet worked on.
Many hospitals and hospices now offer reflexology as it is a non-intrustive form of treatment and suitable for most people. It is ideal as a one off treatment or as a course of treatments. It is always advisable to tell your GP if you are embarking on a course of treatments. It will help to balance the body and thus you may experience your body trying to rid itself of toxins or emotions. Do make sure your reflexology practitioner is insured and registered with one of the accredited bodies (such as the British Reflexology Assocation).
People are often very embarrassed about having their feet touched but reflexology can help overcome this, which can then lead on to other benefits such as taking more of an interest in one's health and lifestyle in general. Obviously it is not for everyone but for those wanting to experience some form of complementary therapy reflexology is an ideal way to dip your toes into that wide and fascinating world.

Thanks for the nformation on reflexology, are there no problems working on pregnant women? If it can be used to induce labour can it not also bring on labour at the wrong time?
