What I know about the Rugby Union Heineken Cup, the final of which takes place tomorrow between Munster (Ireland) and Biarritz (France) at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, could be written on the back of a match ticket with enough room left over to write my Amazon Wish List.

Back in 1978, the All Blacks were also considered to be the best in the world.  They were coming to the end of a tour of the British Isles where not only had they not been beaten by any of the national and regional teams they played.  But they hadn't conceded a single point!

So when, on 31st October, they were due to play the raggedy little Munster team, 10,000 fans turned up to a sell-out game.  It was inevitable Munster would be beaten but the chance to see the world famous All Blacks was one not to miss.

Stunningly though, Munster not only beat them but the All Blacks didn't get a single point!

Nobody gave Munster a chance that day.

The All-Blacks were unbeatable and even the fierce spirit and determination of the Munstermen was not going to be sufficient to upset the balance of power.

Munster proved everybody wrong.

Halfway into the game, you could almost feel the anxiety seeping through the New Zealand camp.

Munster had got the perfect start with Tony Ward chipping over the All Blacks threequarter line, Jimmy Bowen picking up the bounce and side-stepping Bruce Robertson. The break was on. Full-back Brian McKechnie's tackle was poor and Bowen off-loaded to flanker Christy Cantillon for a famous try under the posts at the Mayorstone end.

'Wardy' added the easy points and with four for a try in those days, it was 6-0 to the Munstermen.

The crowd went wild and soon Munster were rampaging through the visitors rearguard again. Tony Ward had his only pot at goal of the day from a placed ball but it fell short. McKechnie had the easiest of tasks to field the ball and kick clear. He knocked on and Munster had the scrum, Donal Canniffe to Tony Ward, drop goal and 9-0 to the men in the red shirts.

Now the fat was in the fire and you could feel the excitement run through your veins. Thomond Park was on fire with enthusiasm and it was rubbing off on the players. The tackles were ferocious. Seamus Dennison crashed Stu Wilson to the ground near the stand side and both were slow to get back on their feet. Colm Tucker's tackle on Mark Donaldson was so ferocious that it stunned the crowd for a second and then the chants of 'Munster, Munster, Munster' rose up and drifted into the October sky.

We all expected the All Blacks to respond in the second half. They certainly tried to pull back the deficit and if we thought that the first half was physical, that last 40 minutes produced so many crunching tackles and full-hearted rugby from both sides that we knew we witnessing something special.

The Munster defence withstood almost continuous pressure in the first 20 minutes of that second half. Then they drove upfield towards the Ballynanty end, the crafty Ward popped a kick over the head of Stu Wilson who carried it over and conceded the five metre scrum.

The All Blacks spoiled the Munster heel but Colm Tucker picked up, fed Tony Ward and as the ball sailed between the posts from the drop goal attempt, we knew that this was going to be one of Munster's finest hours.

It was a sporting tie and the final whistle signalled scenes of wild celebration.

Munster had beaten the All Blacks, becoming the first, and so far only Irish team to do so and those of us who were there to enjoy the occasion will never forget it.
